What is all the Twitter about?
November 3, 2009 | | Leave a Comment
For about a year now, I have been hearing about this “phenomenon” called Twitter. My friends talk about it, my classmates talk about it and even my professors talk about it.
Social media has been a prominent trend in my life since I started high school, but I am only beginning to catch on to the new trend called Twitter.
One of my classes this semester discussed Twitter in a different light. Twitter has absolutely no business plan, but people keep pouring money into the company. I was surprised to hear this. How can a company with no business plan be so successful? I think everyone would like the answer to that question.
With more than 6 million users, I thought I might as well check out Twitter. I still do not quite understand why all of my friends have found it to be so amazing, but I guess that it’s because I am still fairly loyal to Facebook.
The concept I do understand is public relations professionals using Twitter. I would not be hesitant to say that using Twitter for media relations is genius. The idea of tweeting about your client, pitching things to the media and putting your company’s name out there in a free and frequented forum is a concept that’s not too hard to grasp.
Twitter’s strong point is the opportunity it creates for thousands of companies every day. Companies can connect with other companies and build relationships through Twitter. If used correctly, companies have the opportunity to meet new clients. And if public relations professionals are constantly pitching things to the media on behalf of these companies anyway, why not use Twitter to do so?
At least no one will hang up on you, right?
Using Twitter for personal use is still a little over my head because I really do not care what most of my friends ate for breakfast or what television shows they are watching.
But Twitter is one of the most useful tools for any business professional and everyone should keep that in mind. So tweet a little and see whom you will meet.
